Spring Update 2nd April 2014


 So a little bit of an update from me. 


Radio: I recently was a guest on the BBC radio Devon Introducing programme as a pundit on the round table of the new releases from local bands. There was a very good selection of material whoever said that Devon has no great music is so far off the mark. I feel that at the moment the standard of bands and artists has never been higher.  


Last week I was live from the Royal Albert Hall at the Cures first of a 2 night residency there. The show was stunning the best Cure gig I have ever been to and the atmosphere was one of the best of any gig I have ever attended. 

This Friday I will be live from the Danny Thompson 75th Birthday gig in London with special guest Richard Thompson that should be amazing.
Phonic FM in Exeter are doing a show dedicated to yours truly on Tuesday 29th April at 8pm on 106.8  FM in Exeter and on the web at http://www.phonic.fm I will be talking about all the music I have done and more importantly the music that I like to listen to. Hopefully with a few surprises on the way. 


Secrets for September: we played our first gig of the year the other day at the Tobacco House in Exeter and we have a few shows lined up for the summer. The new EP ‘Letting Go and Live’ has been getting some great reviews if you have not heard it yet then pop along to http://secretsforseptember.bandcamp.com .


Department Factory: I performed with Michael Soundy another Department Factory show and like last year we released it the following day. One review has said  'Matthew North is a talented musician who is able to combine elements of disparate genres in a seamless and coherent fashion.'

Other music: I have been asked to play guitar on a very special project more to come on that but it’s a new field for me. I have also contributed guitar to a new song by the band ‘The Legendary Ten Seconds’ and I’m also playing guitar on the new Scott Morrison EP added to that I’m also going to be releasing my first solo single called ‘Something Memorable’ it’s a song I did when I was the guitarist of Falling Trees for a bit and they were happy for me to have a crack at doing my own interpretation of it and thankfully they like it.

The first guitar I ever saw, now with 2 amplifiers made by GP Electronics whom made the first Amplifier I ever saw.  When I was a boy I saw something very magical. It was called an Electric guitar and it had something equally as magical, a thing called an Amplifier. Both of these things were owned by a friend of my parents called John. The Guitar was a 1964 Gretsch Tennessean. Queen and Adam Lambert one for the moaners

So the question is how many bands that have been around almost 50 years still have the same line up and have never broken up ? Answer not many the closest is probably U2.  Most major bands have had so many line up changes over the years there may be only 1 or 2 original members left. Robert Smith is the only original member of the Cure, Dave Brock for Hawkwind, Nick Rhodes for Duran Duran & Chris Squire for Yes. Drummers Fair well in that the only long serving original members of Pink Floyd, the Yardbirds & The Animals are the Drummer. Nobody batters an eyelid in that Lynyrd Skynyrd have hardly any original members because of the fateful air crash. Or lack of original members of Big Country  or Thin Lizzy. So why last night was social media full of venom for what Queen are doing these days? GP Electronics - IC130 Mk2 Guitar Amplifier made in Bovey Tracey

GP Electronics IC130 Mk2 from 1977 Those that follow here may have seen a little while ago I made a blog about GP electronics Amplifiers made in my hometown of Bovey Tracey. Well I was contacted by a musician called Richard from Bath whom had recently acquired a GP amp that belonged to a friend of his whom had passed away.  We had a chat about it online and I told him about the amp and so on. Anyhow a few weeks passed and he decided he wanted to pass it on and offer it to me. I popped up to Bristol at a convenient spot and I purchased the amplifier from him.  This is also an amp that I have seen before in a Combo version. The IC130 MK2 was very much designed as a Guitar amplifier rather than the more general purpose of its predecessor.
